ECAS Creates Hub to Address Populism

To join kick-off meeting, CSOs and projects on the topic must apply by July 5

   July 06, 2021 1:30 PM - July 06, 2021 3:00 PM

The DEMOS consortium partner in Brussels, European Citizen Action Service (ECAS), will start a Civil Society Hub for organisations addressing the challenges posed by populist movements. The launch online event will take place on July 6 at 1:30 PM (CEST). Participants are required to submit a short application about their projects by July 5 in order to participate. More information below.

The envisioned European network is a follow up activity of a DEMOS research conducted by ECAS. The study, which the project has recently released open access, looked into the strategies, best practices, and challenges of European projects tackling populism or safeguarding values of liberal democracy.

The study found that there is potential for more collaboration between project managers. Interviewees reported to know very little about other actors addressing or studying populism despite their interest in connecting and sharing lessons learned. According to the research, spaces designed for synergies are scarce in Europe.

“The hub fills that gap,” says Hendrik Nahr, a DEMOS researcher and European Democracy Outreach Coordinator at ECAS. “It will serve as a point of exchange for best practices and is aimed at creating synergies between a diverse set of actors that have implemented projects about populism.”
