Online Event: BRIDGE Conference

Project members discuss the links between populism and democratic backsliding

   June 07, 2021 9:00 AM - June 08, 2021 1:30 PM

DEMOS H2020 leader Zsolt Boda (Centre for Social Sciences, Budapest) and project co-investigator Helle Krunke (University of Copenhagen) will explore the challenges posed by populism at the conference “Solidarity, Identity and Populism in the EU”.

The event is part of the BRIDGE project, an academic network funded by the Erasmus+ programme to study EU crises and governance responses. Hosted by the University of Copenhagen, the conference will be held live on Zoom application between June 6 and 7. Registration is free (read more below).

On Monday, June 7, Prof. Krunke will explain how populist politics has affected the EU legal system, focusing on whether it contributes to defining the constitutional identity of the EU. That aspect has not been extensively explored in previous research about the topic.

On the same day, Prof. Boda will discuss democratic backsliding and populist strategy. Discontent about democracy strengthens populism, so does social divisions and inequality.

But Boda explains that, instead of addressing those issues, populism further contributes to deepening polarization and eroding democracy. The project leader will also discuss ideas to tackle the negative impacts of populism on liberal democracy.
