DEMOS presents work on political communication at AssoComPol

Project teams from Italy and Poland will present findings about populism in the media in Italian conference

   December 12, 2019 12:00 AM - December 14, 2019 12:00 AM

DEMOS scholars at University of Turin (UNITO, Italy) and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (AMU, Poland) will deliver preliminary findings on media populism at the conference Political Communication in the digital media ecosystem, organized by the Italian Association of Political Communication (AssoComPol), between December 12 and 14.

Departing from the concept of “media populism”, Giuliano Bobba and Antonella Seddone, from UNITO, created two media populism indexes—populism through the media, which analyzes content of media coverage; and populism by the media, which measures dimensions of media populism—to fill an important gap in literature and shed light on the connections between populism and the media in Italy. The UNITO team will give their presentation on December 13 between 9-10:30 am.

On the same day, Agnieszka Stępińska, from AMU, deepens the analysis of populist political communication in Europe during the 2019 European Parliamentary Elections. By comparing a large database of Facebook data from 12 EU countries, Agnieszka sought to investigate how Europe and EU institutions have been used by populist political actors, bypassing media outlets and framing populist arguments directly to citizens. Her presentation will take place between 12-1:30 PM in a panel dedicated to discussing political communication in Europe.
