The Populist Challenge for Contemporary Democracy

Partner University of Barcelona convenes workshop with chair of DEMOS advisory board to discuss impacts of populism on constitutional law

   December 12, 2019 12:00 AM

DEMOS Barcelona-based team led by Prof. Josep Castellà Andreu will convene a workshop at University of Barcelona tomorrow (12/12) to discuss how institutional arrangements have contributed to the spread of populism in Europe, findings of a key project task. Open to the public, the workshop includes presentations from Prof. Tania Groppi, who chairs DEMOS's Advisory Board of experts, and Marco Antonio Simonelli, a researcher of Prof. Castellà's team.

Using questionnaires and a series of other research methods, Prof. Castellà's team also singled out institutional barriers to populism. One key conclusion of the Barcelona study is that populism constitutes a threat to both representative and constitutional dimensions of contemporary European democracies.

The study is a part of a comprehensive scientific deliverable of the DEMOS project. It comprises studies on populist actors and policies triggering populism, the state of the art of democratic efficacy—a key DEMOS novelty—, and the relationships between populism and psychology accross Europe.
